El Medano is located in the south of Tenerife within easy reach of Reina Sofia [Tenerife South] airport, just a 10-15 minute taxi ride away.
The small town of El Medano [a former fishing village] is a unique resort and has developed into a laid-back resort for the sporty types, and although it hasn't escaped the region's ongoing building boom, it has managed to retain a pleasant easy-going atmosphere.
The focal point of El Medano is the Plaza Principe de Asturias where you will find a selection of restaurants, bars and cafes and is adjacent to the large main beach [awarded a Blue Flag for 2010]. A boardwalk from the centre, follows the length of the natural stretch of sand, lined with shops selling clothing and watersports equipment.
El Medano is also known for its close proximity to Montana Roja [Red Mountain] which is in the centre of a nature reserve protecting a dune ecosystem. And is a striking red coloured remnant of a volcano and is approximately 170m high. The beaches in El Medano are divided by the Montana Roja. The coastline of El Medano is low-lying and rocky. An easily followed path from the western end of El Medano beach leads through this area to the summit, while another rounds the hill on the inland side and leads to a beautiful but windswept beach - Playa de la Tejita.
For a change of scenery - visit nearbyLos Abrigos. Another quiet resort with several restaurants specialising in shellfish, there is a promenade along which you can stroll and there is also a quaint harbour. Alternatively take the short taxi ride to San Isidro, a typically Spanish town where you will be able to do some shopping.
In the evening, take a stroll along the promenade and take a few drinks in one of the bars which remain open until midnight/1am.
So, if you are looking for a laid-back holiday, where you can relax and unwind, then El Medano may be ideal.
